A joint venture between NRW Holdings and Italian company Salini Impregilo has been formally awarded the $1.176 billion contract to build one of Western Australia’s most transformational public transport projects, the Forrestfield-Airport Link. The joint venture structure comprises Salini Impregilo 80% and NRW 20%, with NRW also having the opportunity to provide contract services direct to the project. Construction is expected to begin on the project later this year.
Australian mining and civil construction company NRW Holdings Limited (ASX:NWH) (“NRW” or “the Company”) today announced it will jointly deliver one of Western Australia’s most transformational public transport projects, following the formal award of the Forrestfield-Airport Link contract. The project will consist of a train line connecting Forrestfield to the city, opening up Perth’s eastern suburbs to rail for the first time.
NRW Holdings will partner with Italian firm Salini Impregilo to deliver the Forrestfield-Airport Link project for the Public Transport Authority of Western Australia (PTA). The Salini Impregilo-NRW joint venture (SI-NRW JV) will be responsible for the design, construct and maintenance elements of the project.
The joint venture structure comprises Salini Impregilo 80% and NRW Holdings Limited 20%. In addition NRW will have the opportunity to provide contract services directly to the project.
As announced today by the Minister*, the contract award value to the SI-NRW JV is $1.176 billion.
NRW Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Jules Pemberton welcoming the project award said, “This is a significant milestone in our Company’s history. The contract is of strategic importance to NRW, forming a key part of our diversification strategy. Our involvement in this world class project, with global construction company Salini Impregilo, supports the development of NRW’s overall service capability and exposure to other opportunities in the major contracts space.”
Mr Pemberton said early stage works are already underway in NRW’s Belmont office before the project team mobilises to site later this year.

About the Forrestfield-Airport Link Project:
The rail link will connect with the existing Midland line near Bayswater Station and will run to Forrestfield through underground tunnels, to ensure minimal impact on the existing land and road network. The $2 billion State Government-funded project is expected to improve connections to and from Perth Airport, the eastern suburbs and regional centres. Construction will begin in 2016, with the first trains scheduled to be running on the line in 2020.
